Text description provided by the architects

The new Education Centre within New South Wales Parliament House provides a dedicated centre of excellence where students can develop an understanding of the government’s role in the state. The first of its kind in the parliamentary precincts, the new learning space increases teaching and learning opportunities at Australia’s first and oldest Parliament.

As well as building upon the number of school group visits, the space supports the delivery of new higher education programs. University students, teachers and educators can now also benefit from a range of education seminars and workshops.

What was the brief?

NSW Parliament House had developed in an ad hoc way over the years and required modernisation. Key to the brief was the creation of carefully crafted designs that enhance the heritage significance of the building. There was also a real need to develop a dedicated education centre that would inspire and connect students with Parliament.

What were the solutions?

The NBRS ARCHITECTURE Interior Design Studio worked with Parliament House to create designs that are modern and support all stages of learning. By re-purposing a redundant printing area, the parliamentary education department has been provided with a contemporary learning environment that respects the existing building.

The learning space accommodates 60 - 80 students seated and is arranged in a horse-shoe shape to mirror the shape of the Parliamentary Chamber. Students can immerse themselves in Parliament and explore how Australian democracy works first hand. The space has been designed with flexibility in mind to support a range of teaching and learning techniques. An adjacent auditorium facilitates formal seminars and workshops. A neutral palette has been enhanced with carefully considered design finishes and furnishings.
