The Waitpinga Retreat is a true holiday home, allowing the owners to escape their city life, and enjoy their coastal property and the company of family and friends in a casual and informal setting. The siting of the house provides an intimate connection with the remnant bushland on one side and dramatic coastal views on the other. A breezeway, which separates the one bedroom home from the guest quarters is the focal point of the home, creating an indoor-outdoor space under one main roof. It provides flexibility operating as an open verandah or as a sunroom when the glazed bi-fold doors are closed.
What was the brief?
Our clients wanted a house which allowed them to escape the city and enjoy their coastal property with their family and friends in a casual and informal setting. The design of the house was to provide flexibility, and reflect the owner's desire to live sustainably.
What were the key challenges?
The challenge was to provide the owners with flexibility, allowing the house to be used as a one bedroom home at times, and to also open up to house visiting guests. The breezeway separates these two zones while providing an all weather indoor-outdoor living space.
Key products used:
Durable and robust materials typically used in the many surrounding shearing sheds were chosen. These included galvanised steel, Australian hardwood and fibre cement.
What are the sustainability features?
The house is totally off-grid, producing and storing power, storing rainwater, treating wastewater on-site, and heating using firewood from site.
